LOTUS CARS EPOXY RESIN FLOOR COATING

As part of Lotus Cars’ expansion, a 12,300sqm factory on Hurricane Way in Norwich is being converted to a new, high-tech sub-assembly manufacturing facility. As part of the factory refurbishment, we were contracted to prepare the floor and apply an epoxy resin floor coating.

EPOXY RESIN FLOOR COATING PREPARATION

The key to all industrial processes, and especially the efficacy of epoxy flooring is in the preparation. The factory floor had an existing coating, which was sound in some areas but failing in others, so we elected on a full removal to give us the best outcome. To remove the existing coating, the concrete floor was mechanically prepared by blast tracking and diamond grinding, bringing the entire area back to a clean, bare, open concrete profile.

There were also several protruding metal elements which needed grinding back to below the floor surface. Once the surface was prepared, we filled any cracks and repaired areas of damaged floor with an epoxy repair mortar prior to applying the epoxy resin floor coating.

EPOXY RESIN COATING

Once all preparation was complete, we applied one coat of Flowcrete Hydraseal DPM Primer. Our paint was selected owing to the relative humidity level in the concrete measuring above 80% in all four separate test areas. The coating was applied by rubber squeegee and back-rolled to ensure even spread of the coating.

Once the DMP primer was applied and had fully dried, we applied two coats of Flowcrete SF41 Epoxy Resin Floor Coating. This coating was also applied by rubber squeegee and back-rolled to smooth and evenly distribute the resin over the floor, with edges being cut in with a brush.

The single coat of DPM primer and two coats of SF41 gave a total coating thickness of around 900-1000 microns when dry.
